ABC Priority Framework on the NCLEX
When ABCs apply, when they don't, common traps.
Airway-Breathing-Circulation is the default NCLEX priority framework. It's not the only one.
When ABCs apply
Any physiologic threat in the question. Multiple patients with vital sign abnormalities.
Hierarchy within ABCs
Airway first (obstruction, edema). Breathing second (RR, SpO2, work of breathing). Circulation third (BP, HR, perfusion).
When ABCs don't apply
When no patient has an ABC threat, escalate to safety, then unexpected findings, then Maslow.
Frequently asked
ABCs vs Maslow conflict?
ABCs win when present. Maslow is the framework when no physiologic threat.
