ATI vs HESI: what's the difference

Two major nursing school exam systems explained. What ATI and HESI test, how they predict NCLEX outcomes, and which programs use which.

ATI and HESI are the two major proctored exam systems used by US nursing programs. You take whichever your school chose. They're different but both predict NCLEX outcomes.

ATI overview

Assessment Technologies Institute. Used by 50%+ of US BSN programs. Proctored exams by content area (peds, OB, med-surg, etc.), then a Comprehensive Predictor.

HESI overview

Health Education Systems Inc. Used by many BSN and ADN programs. Specialty exams plus a HESI Exit Exam.

Predictive validity

ATI Comprehensive Predictor: 92%+ predicted probability correlates with ~90% real NCLEX pass rate. HESI Exit Exam: 850+ correlates with ~95% pass rate (some studies higher).

Which is harder?

Subjective. HESI items often skew slightly more application-focused; ATI items skew slightly more content-recall. Both feel hard.

What if your school uses neither?

Some programs use both. Some use neither. Either way, supplement with NCLEX-specific prep (UWorld, NR, Archer).

Frequently asked

Can I take ATI / HESI on my own?

ATI sells some products to individuals. HESI primarily institutional.

Which is more accurate?

Both reasonably accurate. Trust the trajectory across multiple exams, not a single score.
