First Year as a New Grad RN: Survival Guide
What to expect, common mistakes, when to ask for help.
First year is hard. Most new grads consider leaving at month 6. Most don't.
Months 1-3
Drink from firehose. Overwhelm normal. Lean on preceptor. Don't try to look smart, ask everything.
Months 4-6
Independence growing. Mistakes happen. Document. Learn from them. Watch for burnout signs.
Months 7-9
Confidence emerging. Patterns recognizable. Start to enjoy parts of the job.
Months 10-12
Mostly autonomous. Begin to consider next steps (specialty switch, certification, BSN).
When to escalate
Unsafe assignments. Bullying. Inadequate orientation. Talk to charge → manager → HR if needed.
