NGN Scoring Explained
How NGN partial credit works, polytomous vs dichotomous, why your score may differ from raw correct.
NGN items don't score like traditional NCLEX. Partial credit changes the math.
Polytomous vs dichotomous
Traditional items: dichotomous (right or wrong, all or nothing). NGN items: polytomous (partial credit possible).
How partial credit works
Each component of an NGN item scored independently. Get 3 of 4 right = ~75% credit on that item, weighted into your overall ability estimate.
Why this changes strategy
Don't leave NGN responses blank. A guess can score partial credit; a blank scores 0.
Frequently asked
Different score for NGN vs traditional?
Same overall pass/fail outcome. The algorithm integrates all items into ability estimate.
Why NGN feel different?
More clinical reasoning, less recall. Partial credit reduces 'all or nothing' anxiety.
