NGN vs Traditional NCLEX: What's Actually Different

What the 2023 NGN rollout changed and what stayed the same.

The NGN rollout added new item types and partial credit. The core test plan and ability estimation didn't change as much as you'd think.

What changed

6 new item types added. Partial credit on most. Case studies with multiple linked items. Increased emphasis on clinical judgment over recall.

What stayed the same

Test plan content categories roughly the same. CAT algorithm still IRT-based. Pass/fail outcome. Roughly same time limit (5 hours). Traditional multiple choice still majority of items.

Implications for prep

Still need broad content. Add 30-50 NGN practice items. Comfort with new interface. Don't over-pivot, traditional items still most of exam.

Frequently asked

Will the test change again?

Test plan reviewed every 3 years. Item types can evolve. Major redesigns rare.

Are NGN questions harder?

Not inherently. Different cognitive load. Some find them easier (partial credit cushion).
