Oxytocin (Pitocin) on the NCLEX
Oxytocin: labor induction/augmentation, postpartum hemorrhage, hyperstimulation signs.
Oxytocin (Pitocin) augments labor and treats postpartum hemorrhage. High-alert. NCLEX tests hyperstimulation and water intoxication.
Use
Induce or augment labor (IV titrated). Postpartum hemorrhage control (IV or IM).
Hyperstimulation signs
Contractions >5 in 10 min, lasting >90 sec, or resting tone elevated. Fetal distress: late decels, bradycardia. Stop infusion, left lateral, O2, IV fluid.
Water intoxication
Oxytocin has antidiuretic effect at high doses. Risk with prolonged infusion + hypotonic fluids. Monitor I&O, electrolytes.
PPH dose
Higher concentration (e.g., 20-40 units in 1000 mL LR) wide open after delivery.
Frequently asked
