Pacing on the NCLEX: how fast to go
Time per question, when to slow down, when to speed up, and what the ROOT rule means for the last 60 items.
Pacing matters less than people think, until ROOT (Run-Out-of-Time). Then it matters a lot.
Baseline pace
60-90 seconds per traditional item. 2-3 minutes per NGN matrix or bow-tie. At 75 questions, that's 75-120 minutes of actual answering time. The 5-hour total includes the tutorial and breaks.
When to speed up
If you're past question 50 and have used more than 50% of your time, start picking faster. Don't sprint the last 10, pace into the last 25.
When to slow down
NGN items deserve full 2-3 minutes. Don't rush bow-tie or matrix items just because you're worried about time. They're worth more to your score and partial credit rewards careful selection.
The ROOT rule
If you run out of time, the algorithm scores you on your last 60 items. If those 60 items put you above the cutoff, you pass. If not, you fail. This means: if you're behind on time, focus on getting the last 60 right; don't sprint the whole exam.
Frequently asked
Is there a maximum time limit?
5 hours total including tutorial and breaks. The test ends at 5 hours regardless of question count.
Can I skip a question?
