When to Switch Nursing Specialties

Timing your move, internal vs external, what skills transfer.

Most nurses change specialty in their career. Timing and approach matter.

Earliest reasonable move

12-18 months on current unit. Less than that signals instability to hiring managers.

Internal transfer

Often easier. Existing relationships. Less orientation reset.

External move

Sometimes only path to specialty. New orientation. Can include sign-on.

Skills that transfer

Assessment, prioritization, IV skills, communication. Specialty-specific (vent management, ACLS) require new orientation.
