The 12-week NCLEX study plan
Twelve weeks is enough to start from a 50% baseline and arrive ready. Month-by-month breakdown with content review, question volume, and four mocks.
Twelve weeks is the right runway for two kinds of student: (1) someone repeating after a fail and rebuilding from scratch, and (2) someone working full-time who can only realistically commit 90 minutes a day. Both work with this plan if you respect the structure.
Month 1: foundation
Baseline mock on day 1. 30 questions/day, 60 min content review/day. Cycle through all body systems and the test plan categories. Off day each week. Second mock end of month 1.
Goal by end of month 1: every system seen once, question stamina built up to 30/day comfortably, mistake bank started.
Month 2: build volume
Bump to 50 questions/day. Content review drops to 30-45 min, targeted at last week's wrong-answer topics. Mock at week 6 and week 8.
Goal by end of month 2: 1,000-1,200 questions done, mock score moving up consistently, NGN format comfortable.
Month 3: target and taper
Weeks 9-10: 60 questions/day, weighted toward weak categories. Pharm and management of care emphasis.
Week 11: 50 questions/day. Mock #4 mid-week. Mistake bank focused review.
Week 12: taper. 40 questions early week, 30 mid-week, 0 day before. Test day.
Plateau is the danger
On 12-week plans, most students plateau around week 6-7. Mock scores stop improving. The fix: change your question source. If you've been doing only UWorld, switch to Archer or your in-app questions. New stem-writing styles force you out of pattern-matching the bank instead of the content.
Frequently asked
Is 12 weeks too long?
Only if you let it become a coast. Set hard checkpoints, mocks at weeks 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, and reschedule if you're not improving by week 8.
Can I work full-time and run this?
Yes. The plan is built around 60-90 min/day plus weekends. The trade-off is no margin for sick days.
