Studying for the NCLEX while working full-time

How to run a real NCLEX prep when you're working 40+ hours. Realistic schedules, weekend math, and what to cut.

If you're working full-time, you have 60-90 minutes on weekdays and 4-6 hours on weekends. That's enough for a 10-12 week plan; not enough for 4 weeks. Plan accordingly.

Weekday structure

60-90 min total. 20 min content review (audio while commuting works). 30 questions during lunch or after kids' bedtime. 10-min mistake bank re-do.

Weekend structure

4-5 hours each weekend day. Saturday: one focused study block (mock or 75 questions). Sunday: catch-up on weekly weak topics + mistake bank deep dive. Don't try 8-hour study days; accuracy crashes after hour 3.

What to cut

Live review courses (4-hour evening sessions you'll miss half of). Re-reading textbook. Color-coded notes. Replace with questions, audio review, and short mistake bank sessions.

Realistic runway

10-12 weeks for someone working full-time. Compress to 8 weeks only if you have very strong exit-exam scores. Anything less, you'll arrive fried.

Frequently asked

Can I do it in 6 weeks while working?

Possible if you average 90 min/day weekdays and 5 hours each weekend day. That's 12 hours/week. Doable but burnout risk is real.

Should I take vacation the week before?

Yes if possible. Even 3 days off lets you taper properly and get to test day rested.
