Kaplan NCLEX prep: honest 2026 review
Kaplan's NCLEX prep in 2026: the Decision Tree method, the Q-bank, QT5/QT6 cutoffs, live classes. What's strong, what's bloated.
Kaplan is the 'school-shaped' option in NCLEX prep, structured courses, instructor-led tiers, a decision-tree teaching framework that's actually distinct. It's also one of the more expensive options. Here's the breakdown.
What Kaplan owns
Structure. Kaplan's course is the most curriculum-like of the major options. Modules, weekly schedules, instructor pacing if you take the live class. If you do well in classroom environments, Kaplan fits.
Decision Tree. This isn't marketing, it's a real teaching framework for working through test questions. Some students find it sticky and useful; others find it gimmicky. Try a sample item to see if it clicks.
Where Kaplan wins
Question quantity. Kaplan has roughly 3,800 questions in its bank, the largest in this tier.
QT5 and QT6 predictors. Kaplan's Question Trainer series ends with adaptive full-mock predictors that validate well against real outcomes. 65%+ on QT5 or QT6 is the readiness target.
Live class option. For students who want classroom structure, Kaplan offers live (in-person and online) instructor-led courses. None of the major competitors offer a true live option at the same scale.
Decision Tree for students who like frameworks. The structured approach to question analysis appeals to systematic thinkers.
Where Kaplan falls short
Cost. The course-plus-Q-bank tiers run high. The Q-bank-only option is more competitive but loses some of what makes Kaplan distinctive.
NGN coverage was slow. Kaplan's NGN-format update lagged Archer and UWorld in 2023-2024. By 2026 the coverage is solid but the brand reputation took a hit during the transition.
Decision Tree fatigue. Students who don't gel with the framework spend energy fighting it instead of learning content.
Corporate feel. Course materials are competent but rarely memorable. Rationales are functional, not the long thoughtful pieces UWorld provides.
Who should pay for Kaplan
Students who thrive in structured courses with deadlines. Students whose nursing program has a Kaplan partnership and includes a discount or bundle. Students who want a live class option.
Students who like the Decision Tree after trying it.
Who should not pay for Kaplan
Students who learn best from self-paced question practice (the Q-bank-only tier loses the value-add). Students on tight budgets who can get equivalent question practice cheaper.
Students who tried the Decision Tree sample and found it didn't click.
Subscription strategy
The Self-Paced course + Q-bank tier is the sweet spot for most. Live class is worth it only if you'll actually attend every session. The Q-bank alone undercuts most of Kaplan's distinctive value, at that point, alternatives are stronger.
