NCLEX study group vs solo prep

When study groups help, when they hurt, and how to run one that doesn't waste everyone's time.

Study groups help some students and waste time for others. The variable is how disciplined the group is about structure.

When groups help

Verbal processors. Students who teach better than they read. Accountability-driven students who skip solo sessions. Groups of 2-3 people; larger groups dilute focus.

When groups hurt

When the group becomes social. When everyone studies at the slowest member's pace. When 'review' becomes commiserating about how hard nursing school was.

Structure that works

Pre-decided agenda. Time limits (90 min max). Each person prepares 10 questions to bring. Take turns walking through rationales. End on time.

When to study solo

When you need to build question stamina. When you're working on test-taking pacing. When the group's pace is faster or slower than yours.

Frequently asked

How often should a study group meet?

Once a week, 90 min max. Daily groups become social.

Should I run questions live in the group?

Yes, but each person picks their own answer silently before discussing. Don't groupthink the answer.
