Nursing Salary Guide 2026: What Every RN Should Know

Salary ranges by experience, specialty, geography. How to negotiate, what to ignore, real numbers.

Nursing salary varies more than students realize. A first-year RN in rural Tennessee earns very differently from one in San Francisco. Here's the realistic shape of the curve and how to negotiate within it.

National median (BLS, recent data)

Median annual RN wage around $90,000-95,000. Bottom 10% under $65,000. Top 10% over $135,000. These are W-2 base, don't include shift diffs, overtime, bonuses, travel premiums.

Geographic variation

California: median $135K+. Bay Area, LA: $150K-180K. NYC: $115K-130K. Texas major cities: $80K-95K. Rural anywhere: $55K-75K. Cost of living adjusts much of this, a $130K SF nurse and an $80K Houston nurse may have similar buying power.

Specialty premiums

ICU, ER, OR, L&D typically $5K-15K above floor nursing. CRNA: $200K+. NP: $115K-140K. Travel: $90K-180K depending on contracts and crisis pricing.

Experience curve

Year 1: base hire rate. Year 3: 10-15% above start. Year 5: 20-30% above start. Year 10+: plateau unless management, advanced practice, or specialty cert.

What's not in base

Shift diff: night ($3-7/h), weekend ($2-5/h), holiday (1.5x). Overtime: typically time-and-a-half. Charge pay: $1-3/h extra. Sign-on bonuses: $5K-30K. Tuition reimbursement: $5K-15K/year.

Negotiating

First job: limited room, most have set new-grad scale. Year 2+: experience premium. Bring competing offer. Quantify specialty cert (CCRN, OCN). Ask about shift bid, specialty differential, education reimbursement.

What to ignore

Job postings 'up to $X', that's the top of scale, not your offer. Recruiter promises without written confirmation. 'Premium pay' that's just shift diff repackaged.
