Travel Nursing in 2026: Real Money, Real Downsides

Travel rates, agencies, contracts, taxes, what life is actually like on assignment.

Travel nursing pay surged 2020-2022 during COVID crisis pricing. Rates normalized but remain higher than staff. The lifestyle isn't for everyone.

Current pay shape

Travel rates: $1,800-3,500/week typical. High-cost areas + crisis pay: $4,000-6,000+. Most contracts 13 weeks. Includes hourly + stipends (housing, meals, travel).

Tax-free stipends

If you maintain a tax home and travel for work, stipends are tax-free. Significant after-tax advantage. Don't take stipends if you don't have a real tax home, IRS audit risk.

Top agencies

Aya, AMN, Cross Country, Trusted Health, Nomad. Multiple agencies = better contract selection. Recruiters vary in quality, find one you trust.

What to avoid

Contracts with vague cancellation policies. Specialties you're not strong in (orientation is brief). Crisis assignments in markets without backup.

Reality of travel life

Brief orientation. Variable patient ratios. Sometimes hostile staff. Loneliness. Housing logistics. Family separation. The pay is real; the downsides are real too.

Best for

1-3 years experience minimum. Strong autonomous practice. Adaptable. Geographic flexibility. Financial goals (debt payoff, house down payment).

Frequently asked

Travel nursing for new grads?

Not recommended. Orientation too short. Most agencies require 1-2 years experience.

Crisis pay still exists?

Yes but reduced from 2021 peaks. Spikes during outbreaks or staffing crises.
