What to eat the morning of the NCLEX

What to eat (and not eat) before a 5-hour high-stakes computer exam. Protein, hydration, and the caffeine dose that doesn't backfire.

The NCLEX is up to 5 hours of sustained cognitive load. What you eat affects your blood glucose curve, which affects your concentration around hour 2-3.

The shape of a good morning meal

Protein + complex carb + a little fat. Eggs and toast. Greek yogurt and granola. Oatmeal with peanut butter. Aim for 400-500 calories, 20-30g protein. The protein and fat slow glucose absorption, so you don't get a 90-minute sugar spike and crash.

Caffeine

Drink your normal amount. Not more. Not less. If you usually have one cup, have one cup. Doubling backfires, anxiety amplification, plus you'll need to pee at hour 2 in a way you didn't plan for.

Hydration

Drink water but don't chug a liter at 7am. The 5-hour exam is long, and Pearson VUE allows breaks but the clock keeps running. Sip during your legal 10-min breaks.

What to avoid

New foods. Heavy fried breakfasts. Energy drinks you've never tried. Sugar-only breakfasts (donut and coffee crashes at hour 2). Anything that gives you reflux on a normal morning.

Frequently asked

Can I bring food into the test center?

Yes, to the locker. Pearson VUE provides a locker for personal items. Bring a snack (granola bar, banana, jerky) for your break.

What about during the test?

No food or drink in the testing room. You can leave for a break but the clock keeps running.
