What to wear to the NCLEX
Test centers run cold. Comfort is a performance factor in a 5-hour exam. What to wear and what to leave at home.
Pearson VUE test centers run cold. They also enforce rules about what you can wear. Three categories: temperature, layers, and what's prohibited.
What to wear
Layers. A short-sleeve t-shirt under a light sweater or zip-up hoodie. The room is often 67-69°F and you're sitting still for hours. Comfortable closed-toe shoes. Lined leggings or loose pants, nothing constricting. Hair tied back if it's long enough to fall in your face.
What's prohibited or hassle
Hats are generally not allowed in the testing room (religious head coverings are accommodated; bring documentation if asked). Watches must be removed and stored in your locker. Bulky jewelry will get inspected, leave it at home. Scarves are sometimes asked about. Anything with pockets you can't empty will be flagged.
The hoodie debate
Hoodies are usually fine but pockets get checked. Some centers ask you to pull the hood off or remove the hoodie entirely. A zip-up cardigan or fleece avoids the hassle and serves the same temperature purpose.
Frequently asked
Can I wear my work scrubs?
Yes, but they run hot under nervous system activation. Scrubs are designed for movement; you're sitting. A cotton t-shirt is more comfortable for 5 hours.
Do I need to take off my shoes?
No, but they may be inspected if they're closed-toe boots or have thick soles.
